Many
equine athletes suffer from back soreness that ultimately results
in impaired performance and in some cases behavioral issues.
Factors that may contribute to this condition are: poor saddle
fit, lameness or simply the physical demands of the horses'
discipline. Saddle fit is a crucial component to optimal performance
and regular checks for appropriate fit are important because
changes can occur as the horse's body shape alters with weight
loss/gain and changes of musculature. A complete lameness exam
is warranted to determine if there is an underlying lameness
component causing the soreness, and to elicit the specific area
of back pain. Depending on the needs of the horse, there are
many therapies that can aid in the resolution of back soreness
and return your horse to its full potential.
The doctors at Great Lakes Equine Wellness Center are committed
to instigating new therapeutic techniques and are now offering
Mesotherapy to treat back soreness. Mesotherapy consist of injecting
a small amount of medication into the dermis over the affected
area; though these injections are very superficial they have
been shown to reduce symptoms by stimulating the mesoderm of
the skin. This therapy can be used alone or in conjunction with
other medical treatments if necessary. Responses to mesotherapy
vary so be sure to consult your veterinarian to decide if mesotherapy
is the right choice for your equine athlete.
