GLEWC Doctors On The Road Educating Alternatives
For
five years now, Dr. Patty has been sharing her wealth of knowledge
about Veterinary Spinal Manipulative Therapy (VSMT), or Animal
Chiropractic Care, with both veterinarians & chiropractors
around the country. For at least eight months out of the year,
she has been instructing students for one week a month at the
globally recognized Options for Animals College of Animal Chiropractic
in Wellsville, Kansas, where she herself received her chiropractic
education. The courses she teaches range from horse handling
labs & veterinary
basics to veterinary pathology, topography & chiropractic
technique. In conjunction with her background in Acupuncture,
Dr. Patty is a driving force behind GLEWC’s holistic therapies.

In addition to Dr. Patty, Dr. Rob will also be spending some
of his
upcoming time teaching. From both February 9-14 and March 9-14,
Dr. Rob will be at the Healing Oasis Wellness Center in Sturtevant,
WI. There, he will be teaching students of the international
educational institution on VSMT as part of their 226 hour state
approved certification program. Along with demonstrating proper
VSMT technique & lectures, Dr.
Rob will also be overseeing the wet labs that the students will

GLEWC Doctors Attend Equine Dentistry Wet Lab & Seminar
On
Saturday, January 16th, both Dr. Rob & Dr. Julie attended
the Wisconsin Equine Practitioners Association seminar & wet
lab on Equine Dentistry. The seminar was presented by Dr. Travis
Henry, DVM, and was located at the Wisconsin Equine Clinic & Hospital
in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. The day was spent with a dentistry
protocol overview by Dr. Henry & an
afternoon of hands on experience practicing dentistry skills.
Stallion Collection Protocol Wet Lab Coming to
GLEWC
On Wednesday, January 27, Dr. Andy Schmidt from the Wisconsin
Equine Clinic & Hospital will be coming to GLEWC to go over
the Clinic's stallion collection protocol. In light of the CEM
outbreak of 2009, GLEWC wants to be sure all precautions are
taken this breeding season. Dr. Schmidt is board certified in
equine reproduction.
GLEWC's Dr. Blohowiak Taking On New Endeavors
A
big congratulations to Dr. Rob, who was recently named to the
Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association's Legislative Committee.
This specific Committee is responsible for maintaining the WVMA
liaison with regulatory agencies and keeping the executive board
advised on legislative matters which deserve WVMA attention.
In addition, Dr. Rob was also elected Wisconsin Equine Practitioners
Association delegate at large. Dr. Rob will now be preparing
to become an Officer and eventually President of the WEPA in
2013.

GLEWC
Volunteers
The
staff of GLEWC volunteered their time on Saturday to make meals,
clean and organize for the Emergency Shelter of the Fox Valley.
They provide temporary shelter to homeless individuals and families
in a safe environment, while providing guidance to those both
homeless and at-risk that promotes independence. They serves
any homeless individuals regardless of their city, county or
state of origin providing they adhere to our admission criteria.
All residents fall below the federal poverty guidelines for income.For

Hortonville industrial park lures business
... Dr. Robert Blohowiak, owner and president of Great Lakes
Equine Wellness Center Inc., also noted the price of the land
in his decision to relocate his business from Neenah to Hortonville.
Blohowiak wanted to expand and update his facility, which offers
a surgical suite, on-site laboratory, offices, patient stalls
and an indoor arena. It is scheduled to open in April...

Contagious Equine Metritis Cases
In May 2010, the USDA’s National Veterinary
Services Laboratories (NVSL) confirmed that an Arabian stallion
on a southern California premises was positive for Taylorella
equigenitalis, the bacterium that causes contagious equine
metritis (CEM). The NVSL also determined that the strain of
the isolated bacterium does not match any T. equigenitalis
strains previously found in the United States, indicating this
case is not related to the CEM outbreak detected in December

Mystery surrounds deaths of horses before
polo match
(CNN) -- Fourteen thoroughbred horses dropped dead Sunday before a polo match
near West Palm Beach, Florida, and a national investigation has been launched
to find the cause, officials said.
The South Florida Sun-Sentinel is reporting that as many as
21 horses in total have died between Sunday night and Monday

Contagious Equine Metritis (CEM) Investigation
The ongoing investigation into contagious equine metritis (CEM)
now includes more than 700 exposed or positive horses, according
to the USDA.
The investigation began in mid-December 2008, when a Quarter
Horse stallion on a Kentucky farm tested positive during routine
testing for international semen shipment.
According to the USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service
(APHIS), as of March 24 the positive horses included 13 stallions
and three mares. In addition to these horses, they had confirmed
the locations of 695 horses exposed to Taylorella equigenitalis.
The 711 horses were located in 46 states. There were 112 exposed
or positive stallions in 19 states and 599 exposed or positive
mares in 44 states. Authorities were still actively tracking
six exposed mares and four exposed stallions.... read more below.
